7. Meet the other person

Finally, the time comes when you have to have that difficult conversation you have been planning. By keeping in mind all the elements that contributed to your preparation, you will have given yourself the best chance to keep the conversation relevant and structured. Also, by being prepared, your stress level is likely to be lower than if you had to improvise the discussion. Less stress means greater cognitive ease and more available attention. These are all assets you can count on.

However, how you are and how you act at the time of the meeting is just as important to the success of your communication as the points you have prepared.

Your colleague will intuitively evaluate your intentions – if you are worthy of their trust or if you are a danger for them. A climate of security and trust will encourage openness and allow the search for solutions and compromises. On the contrary, a hostile and distrustful climate will contribute to closed minds and reinforced tensions.
